NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA SCHEME: BRIEF INTRODUCTION

     In accordance with the National Policy of Education (1986), Government of India started Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs). Presently the JNVs are spread in 27 states and 7 Union Territories. These are co-educational residential schools fully financed and administered by Govt. of India through an autonomous organization, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. Admissions in JNVs are made through the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) at class VI. The medium of instruction in JNVs is the mother tongue or regional language upto class VIII, and English there after for Maths and Science and Hindi for Social Science. The Navodaya Vidyalayas are affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education. While Education in these schools is free including boarding, lodging, uniform and Text Books, a nominal fee of Rs. 200/- per month is collected from the children from IX to XII class. However, children belonging to SC, ST, Girls, Physically handicapped and from the families whose income is below poverty line are exempted from payment of fees.

OBJECTIVES OF THE SCHEME

          The main objectives of Navodaya Vidyalayas are :

01)         To provide good quality modern education including a strong

Component of culture, inculcation of values of the environment, adventure activities and physical education to the talented children predominantly from rural areas.

02)         To ensure that students attain a reasonable level of competency in three languages.

03)         To promote national integration through migration of students from Hindi to non-Hindi speaking states and vice-versa

04)         To serve in each district as focal point for improvement of quality of school education in general through sharing of experiences and facilities.

*      THE SAMITI

          Navodaya Vidyalayas are run by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti which is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Education, Govt. of India. This Samiti has been registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act (XXI of 1860) on 28.02.1986 at Delhi.

*      ESTABLISHMENT OF NAVODAYA VIDYALAYAS

          The scheme of Navodaya Vidyalaya envisaged the establishment of Navodaya Vidyalayas, on an average one in each district. At Present there are 551 vidyalayas spread in 27 states and 7 Union Territories. There are 20 JNVs in Gujarat state.

*      ADMISSION

     Admission in Navodaya Vidyalayas take place on the basis of a test designed and conducted by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Cell, CBSE, Delhi in 21 Indian languages. The test is of non-verbal nature, class neutral and so designed as to ensure that talented children from rural areas are able to compete without facings any disadvantages. Because of the poor communication facilities in rural areas, special care is taken to ensure that children from far-flung rural areas get admission forms free of cost without any problem. Sufficient publicity is done through Doordarsahan, All India Radio, local news papers, pamphlets and visits of Principals and teachers of Navodaya Vidyalaya to the local schools of the district.
